Have a holiday from your head
Do you ever wish you could switch off your head for a minute and enjoy some peace? The good news is that you don't have to. That you can have thoughts and still enjoy peace of mind. Imagine that!
This is possible because it isn't the quantity of thoughts that's the problem, but our identification with them as they flow through our mind. When we identify with our thoughts we start thinking. Most people I meet tell me they think too much! I would most definitely agree! Incessant thinking is very stressful for the body and can be emotionally draining. Thinking too much can also limit your life enjoyment because when you’re ‘in you’re head’ you miss many of the great gifts this present moment has to offer.
A simple way to start to change your relationship with your mind and think less is to count your thoughts. Try it now. Close your eyes and watch your mind; quietly observe the thoughts flowing through your mind. Then, whenever you become aware of a thought; which could be about a gift you need to buy, a conversation you've just had or what you might be doing later, simply give it a number: 1, 2, 3 and so on. See how many thought you can count. For a few minutes, be super attentive and allow whatever thoughts that happen to just flow through.
Doing so creates space between ‘You’ and your thoughts. You will find that space is quiet and peaceful and after a while you can rest back noticing your thoughts floating through your awareness like clouds in the infinite sky.
As you watch your mind move you may notice that because your thoughts come and go, YOU cannot be your thoughts. Thoughts are temporary and constantly changing whereas your True Self is the permanent unchanging awareness that is aware of your thoughts. And that awareness is silent, spacious and still, perfect, whole and complete, right now.
If you put all your attention on the constant movement of your mind you will most likely feel uneasy and stressed. However, when you learn to put your attention on the aspect of your Self that never moves, you naturally feel more peace and contentment.
And with that simple shift in where you put your attention, your life can become a magical adventure filled with abundance, grace and all that is good.
Have a holiday from your busy head – it could be the best present you give yourself this year!
